Update

How to update the MARTA component and optional timetable module safely.

MARTA can be updated using the standard Joomla extension installer. Install the new package directly over the existing component.

Before updating

The administrator should:

  1. Confirm that the package supports the Joomla version in use.
  2. Check the version numbers of the installed and downloaded MARTA releases.
  3. Read the information supplied with the release.
  4. Make a full backup of the website files and database.
  5. Test the update in a test environment.
  6. Schedule a maintenance window if the timetable is used on the production website.

Use only the production com_marta-{version}.zip package for an update, without the -dev suffix.

Updating the component

  1. Sign in to the Joomla administrator area.
  2. Go to System → Install Extensions.
  3. Open the option to install from a package file.
  4. Select the new com_marta-{version}.zip file.
  5. Wait for the message confirming that the installation has completed.

Joomla recognises the installed component and replaces its files with the new version. If the release changes the data structure, the installer also applies the required database updates.

Do not close or refresh the page during the update.

Updating the optional module

If a new timetable module package was supplied with the component, update it after the component:

  1. Remain in the Joomla extension installer.
  2. Upload mod_marta_schedule_days-{version}.zip.
  3. Wait for confirmation that the installation has completed.

The component and module are released as separate extensions, so their version numbers do not need to be identical. Use the set of packages supplied for the deployment.

Verifying the update

After the update:

  1. Open Components → MARTA and confirm that the Dashboard works correctly.
  2. Confirm that the buildings, rooms, groups, instructors and timetable entries are still present.
  3. Open several existing items and confirm that their forms work correctly.
  4. Check the daily and weekly timetable views on the public website.
  5. If you use the module, check the pages to which it is assigned.
  6. Clear the Joomla and browser caches if the view is using older CSS or JavaScript files.

Complete these checks before ending the scheduled maintenance window.

If the update fails

First, save the complete error message displayed by Joomla. Check the Joomla and PHP logs, then make sure the server has sufficient free space and can write extension files.

Do not try to repair a failed update by uninstalling the component.
