Installation and update

Install, verify and safely update the LENA package.

Before installation

Obtain the LENA installation package in ZIP format, for example pkg_lena-1.1.1.zip, and make sure the server meets the technical requirements. The public package contains three extensions:

  • the LENA component — the photo library, albums and website views;
  • the Content - LENA Gallery plugin — replaces an album shortcode with a gallery inside an article;
  • the Editor Button - LENA Gallery plugin — selects an album from the article editor.

Select the complete ZIP package in the installer. You do not need to extract it or install the components separately.

Back up the files and database before changing extensions on a live website.

Installing the package

  1. Sign in to the Joomla administrator area.
  2. Go to System → Install → Extensions.
  3. Select the LENA ZIP package or drag it onto the upload area.
  4. Wait for the installation completion message.
  5. Go to Components → LENA.

The installer registers the component, prepares its data, creates the base photo directories within Joomla’s images directory and installs both plugins. The plugins are enabled automatically on the package’s first installation.

Post-installation check

Check that:

  • LENA appears in the Components menu;
  • its submenu contains Photos, Albums, Categories and About LENA;
  • the photo and album libraries open;
  • Content - LENA Gallery and Editor Button - LENA Gallery are enabled under System → Manage → Plugins;
  • the component options point to the intended photo folder;
  • you can upload one test photo and create its thumbnails.

Selecting the main LENA entry opens the Photos library by default. Albums and categories are available from the component submenu.

Updating

Use Joomla’s standard extension installer to update LENA. This also applies when moving from an older installation containing only the component: installing the current package adds the missing plugins.

  1. Back up the Joomla files and database, including every directory used to store LENA photos.
  2. Read the release information supplied with the new version.
  3. Install the newer package through System → Install → Extensions.
  4. Do not uninstall the previous version first.
  5. Check the administrator area, public menu items and several albums afterwards.

The update checks that the base storage directories exist. It should not require you to assign photos to albums again. A plugin disabled manually remains disabled during a package update; automatic plugin enabling only occurs on the first installation.

Check the package version under System → Manage → Extensions, and the component version on About LENA. The package and its components have independent versions: for the release described here, these are 1.1.1 and 1.0.3, respectively.

Post-update check

Verify:

  • uploading a new photo;
  • editing photo metadata;
  • selecting a cover, the placement of new photos and changing photo order;
  • the Albums in a category view;
  • an individual album and its enlarged viewer;
  • inserting a gallery into an article;
  • permissions for accounts other than Super User.

If thumbnails are missing after an update, use Rebuild thumbnails as described under Photos.
